This year Diwali comes on Saturday – the date is set by the lunar calendar. Known as the Festival of Lights, Diwali  literally means a “row of lights” and is celebrated in India primarily by lighting lamps known as diyas. People celebrate by festooning their homes with strings of lights, lighting sparklers and with fireworks. Friends and family are visited with sweets and gifts.

Diwali also known as Deepavali literally means a row of lights or lamps (Lamps are called Deepaks or Diyas in Hindi)

Hindu mythology attributes many stories to the origin of Diwali. The most popular is that people lit lamps to welcome home the great king Lord Ram who had spent 14 years in exile. He returned home with his wife Sita and brother Laxman after his victory over Ravana – the ruler of Lanka who had kidnapped Sita.

Diwali symbolizes the victory of good over evil and prayers are offered to Laxmi – the Goddess of Wealth and Abundance.

On the occasion of Diwali I would like to wish everyone joy, health and abundance!
